Porirua Adventure Park
Canadian company Select Contracts will be opening an Adventure Park in Porirua. Local iwi Ngāti Toa is in consultation over the layout of the park. Protection of wāhi tapu sites (sacred places) and low impact to the environment are priorities in the development. This news is a major boost for Porirua and the local economy. It will be close to Porirua station allowing riders to easy train access from Wellington.
Construction begins in 2018 and should take about two years. I’m hoping this means it will be open by the time summer begins in December 2019. I’m really looking forward to have a facility this close with a chairlift and fantastic trails. I’ll be keeping track of progress and counting down the days until I go riding there.
Select Contracts opened a similar park in the Port Hills near Christchurch nearly a year ago. The park was badly damaged during the bush fires shortly after opening. It is currently closed for reconstruction, but is due to re-open soon.
Mountain biking destinations in New Zealand just keep getting better: Rotorua has hosted the World Championships and is part of the Crankworx World Tour. Nelson just keeps getting more popular. Queenstown is an internationally recognised adventure town. Christchurch will be back on the scene again soon. And there’s every reason to think that Porirua will join that list. I really hope this facility will become another internationally known destination for riders. I’m really hoping that it will help promote mountain biking in the local area. Maybe there’s young kids living there who could end up being world class riders.
